Reflections on Dry January

Cheers to the power of the pause.

A look through a prism with reflections including: Reflection on Drinking Habits, Physical Well-being Improvements, Mental Well-beging improvements, Increased Energy Levels, Better Sleep

Now that I am well into my forties, drinking alcohol has an undeniable the impact on my sleep, mood, and performance. That’s one reason why, I have participated in a deliberate drinking detox known as “Dry January.”

This annual reset has been a fun casual experiment for the past few years. This isn't about demonizing alcohol; it's about understanding its role in my life.

And something was different this year…

The Wins Are Undeniable

  • Sleep quality has improved dramatically—wake up more refreshed

  • More energy in the gym—running faster, lifting heavier

  • Feel less stressed at work—working efficiently, and working less

  • Creativity and motivation have surged—I am writing more, exercising more, and stressing less

The Reality Check

I was surpised at the frequent feelings of boredom in situations where I might normally have a beer—like a lazy afternoon in Balboa Park. Work events weren’t too bad, though. I opted for NA beer or club soda and bitters.

Looking Forward

Will I drink again? Probably. My goal isn't abstinence—it's optimization.

The key insight: Sobriety isn't just about what you give up. It's about what you gain in return.
